Ahmedabad: Most of the children working in hybrid cottonseed farms in Gujarat are from economically and socially backward communities like Dalits, Adivasis and Other Backward Classes according to a recent study conducted on child labour in hybrid cottonseed production in India.
The study which was conducted in six states also found that most of the children working on seed farms were school dropouts who are now working as full time workers. These children accounted for nearly 55% of the labour force in Gujarat including those below the ages of 14 and those between 15 and 18 years. The study also showcased the higher percentage of girls than boys in the workforce employed.
