Navi Mumbai:Acting on a tip-off provided by activists of the VHP and Bajrang Dal about an alleged beef consignment being transported towards Mumbai along the Sion-Panvel highway , the police laid a trap at Kharghar toll plaza on Friday and waylaid three tempos.

Slaughtered pieces of multiple cattle were found in the tempos. Four persons--Mohammad Rais Qureshi (31), Anwar Shaikh (24), Abdul Shaikh (25) and Mohammad Qureshi (22), all Kurla residents--were arrested.

An RSS volunteer, Shivam Kumar Singh, a Kharghar resident, said, “The meat, from at least 25-30 cattle, appears to be beef. Cattle heads too were found. The meat was being taken to the city despite a beef ban. It was hidden under tarpaulin sheets and behind milk carrier racks. There were ten people in the three tempos; all were detained but only four have been arrested as the other six claimed they were passengers who had taken a lift.“
