Need permanent jobs to move on, say families torn by ’84 anti-Sikh riots

NEW DELHI: Life, for all the children who lost their family members during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, has been one stretched span of misfortune. These children — most of who are in their 30s and married now — often pause to look back at their squandered past that still pulls them back.
Many of them are engaged in small businesses, like that of automobile repairs, while some others still wait for the promised government help for permanent employment.
“I worked with NDMC’s fire department in 2012 on contract. But I could not find a permanent job anywhere. I do not know anyone influential who can help me,” said 33-yearold Amreek Singh, a resident of Tilak Vihar in west Delhi. He has studied till Class X.
